The Peterbald breed was first developed in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1994 by breeder Olga Mironova. The breed was created by crossing a Donskoy (Don Sphynx) with an Oriental Shorthair, resulting in a slender, refined cat with a dominant hair-loss gene.
Unlike other hairless breeds like the Sphynx, which developed from a recessive mutation, the Peterbald’s gene for hairlessness is dominant, meaning kittens may be born bald or with varying degrees of fur that may change over time.
The breed quickly gained recognition and was officially accepted by The International Cat Association (TICA) in 1997. Today, the Peterbald remains one of the most unique and sought-after rare cat breeds.
